PICTURING INDIANS

Opening January 24 2018

An enduring and popular subject for European-trained artists, depictions of First Peoples convey the world view of the colonizers. The Samuel E. Weir Collection includes many such depictions, and even some rare works by Indigenous artists.

PORTRAITS: STUDIES IN CHARACTER

Opening February 7 2018

This exhibition includes formal portraits of prominent individuals along with spontaneous renderings of anonymous subjects. As attempts to capture purpose and personality each is only partially successful, as the sitters conceal as much as they reveal to the artist and, consequently, to the viewer.

DRAWINGS FROM THE COLLECTION

Opening March 7 2018

The Samuel E. Weir Collection includes a significant number of works on paper, including many drawings. Drawings perform many different functions, from aide memoire to preparatory sketch or study to finished composition. The works in this exhibition have been selected by students from Brock University in the Curatorial Studies program.

TOM AND FRIENDS

Opening March 7 2018

This exhibition showcases iconic works by Tom Thomson (1877-1917), including Sketch for the Jack Pine alongside art works by his friends and contemporaries Neil McKechnie, Florence McGillivray, A. Y. Jackson and J. E. H. MacDonald.
