The focus of the collection is historical Canadian art, with additional holdings of European art (particularly British and French) and American art. Sam Weir, an avid collector throughout his lifetime, collected most of the art. The location of his country home had a profound influence on the art patron, evident from the many depictions of Niagara Falls and the Niagara peninsula in the collection. Noteworthy items in the museum’s holdings include a large collection of sculptures by Marc-Aurèle de Foy Suzor-Coté (1869-1937), and a significant number of art works by English artist Augustus John (1878-1961).
